About the Cameron Station Civic Association
The Cameron Station Civic Association (Civic Association) is a volunteer organization formed in 2000 to disseminate relevant information to Cameron Station residents and businesses. The purpose of the Civic Association is to promote the interests of Cameron Station to Alexandria civic leaders and those in city government to ensure we have a prominent voice in City policies and decisions that have an impact on our quality of life and/or property values.
The Cameron Station Civic Association and the Cameron Station Community Association (HOA) are two different groups, each with a distinct focus. The Civic Association’s focus is on redevelopment projects and City policies that affect the quality of life within and around our community. The HOA's primary mission is managing and improving internal community services (e.g., cutting grass, leaf removal, fixing streetlights, running the Cameron Club, etc.).
Cameron Station residents and business owners (ages 18 or older) are automatically non-voting Cameron Station Civic Association members. To become a voting member of the Civic Association, just submit $20.00 for annual dues together with a membership form.
Broadly speaking, the issues the Civic Association has been involved in cover the following:
- Sensible solutions to affordable housing
- City policies and procedures
- Crime and public safety
- Commercial and residential development and redevelopment proposals
- Education
- Environmental issues
- Health services
- Infrastructure
- Open space and tree canopy
- Traffic and transportation

Meeting Schedule
Membership meetings are typically held in January, March, May, September, and November. Meetings may be in person or virtual, and all Cameron Station residents and business owners are welcome to attend. Executive Committee Meetings are typically held in January, April, June, August and October. All Civic Association voting members are welcome to attend.

Become a Voting Member
We invite and strongly encourage Cameron Station residents and business owners to become voting members since they receive more detailed updates on matters affecting Cameron Station and are eligible to become officers or directors. Becoming a voting member of the Civic Association is a fun and easy way to make a difference in your community. Further, It is a great way to increase local business contacts.
To become a voting member of the Civic Association, you must fill out and email our Membership Form. You can pay the $20 per person annual membership fee by cash or a check (made payable to the Cameron Station Civic Association) or pay via Zelle (to cameronstacivic@gmail.com). Notable Accomplishments
Among many other things, the Civic Association has done the following:
- We successfully fought the City in stopping the Wilson Bridge staging area being located in the back of Ben Brenman Park (i.e. numerous trucks and piles of equipment used for repairs to the bridge).
- We successfully stopped a developer from building a huge apartment building on the east side of Cameron Station Blvd.
- We were responsible for getting the City to install speed tables in Ben Brenman Park.
- We were successful in getting the City to reprogram the traffic lights on Duke Street and Cameron Station Boulevard to make street crossings safer.
- We were responsible for getting a tot lot built in Ben Brenman Park.
- We played a significant role in initiating two programs at Tucker Elementary School -- a tutoring program that teams residents with students needing extra help and a program ensuring that every child receives a gift during the holidays.
- We played a major role in requiring the Virginia Paving asphalt plant (located less than a football field from Tucker Elementary School) to install environmental upgrades before being allowed by the City to triple its annual production.
- We were successful in getting the City Council to invoke the sunset provision of Virginia Paving’s Special Use Permit to force it to shut down operations no later than January 1, 2027. It is worth noting that the plant had violated over 22 local, state and federal air and water pollution standards prior to our involvement.
- We were successful in moving up the timetable for repairs to the portion of Cameron Station Blvd. that is near the entrance from Pickett Street.
- We were part of the core group of civic associations responsible for the unanimous vote by the Alexandria City Public School Board against co-locating adult housing at Minnie Howard High School.
- We have played a large role since 2004 in promoting the redevelopment of Landmark Mall.
- We were successful in getting the City to pass an ordinance that imposes significant fines as well as towing and booting for trucks parked illegally on South Pickett Street. Prior to the ordinance, the police had issued more than 600 largely ineffectual tickets to tractor trailers illegally parked around the City with over 90% of those violations being on South Pickett.
- We were successful in ensuring that the City did not make their proposed zoning changes to Coordinated Development Districts (pursuant to which Cameron Station is governed from a zoning standpoint) under the Zoning For Housing Proposal retroactive. Currently none of the Zoning For Housing proposals that were passed by City Council in November 2023 apply to Cameron Station.
- We have been successful in getting the Mayor and City Council to agree to send letters to Congress, the Virginia legislature and the Department of Transportation to regulate flammable liquid transloading facilities like the ethanol transloading facility adjacent to Cameron Station.
