The Cameron Station Civic Association held a well-attended virtual membership meeting on September 3, 2025. Our guest speaker was our Congressionalrepresentative, Don Beyer. What is set forth below is not intended to be a verbatim transcript and has not been reviewed by Congressman Beyer or his staff and may not completely and accurately describe what was discussed. Please also be advised that the Civic Association is apolitical and does not and cannot endorse any political candidate.
The Congressman covered many topics of interest to our community including health insurance coverage, federal funding for education and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the federal budget, Dominion Energy’s recent request for a 15% hike in its base fee, data center proliferation in Virginia, the effects of the $38 trillion national debt, affordable housing, legislation to disallow Congressional stock trading, tariffs and their effects on the economy, preserving social security, and assisting federal workers who have been laid off.
Congressman Beyer noted that he and others are fighting to get funding for SNAP since it affects many programs like the ALIVE! federal family assistance program in Alexandria. He is also involved in preventing further Medicaid cuts and to the reduction in the Premium Tax Credits that helps low-income families pay the premiums for the Affordable Care Act. Congressman Beyer indicated that he has concerns over the environmental impacts of the proliferation of data centers in Virginia and in trying to ensure that we use artificial intelligence in a way that it does what it is intended for. The Congressman stated that the most suitable place to build affordable housing is near the Metro, but that we need to help those who have to live far away due to the high price of housing in the cities. He is very concerned over the $38 trillion federal debt since it is now higher than the gross domestic product and will grow due to interest payments and the obesity crisis in the U.S. which will drastically increase Medicare costs. He noted that one solution to help preserve Social Security would be to eliminate the payroll tax cap. Congressman Beyer also noted that he is in favor of Abigail Spanberger’s Transparent Representation Upholding Service and Trust in Congress Act which seeks to ban individual stock trading by members of Congress and their families.
