Design and Maintenance Standards

As members of a planned community, Cameron Station homeowners and their tenants and guests enjoy a variety of benefits and shared facilities. In return, they are asked to cooperate with their neighbors to create and maintain an enjoyable living environment that promotes the health, safety and welfare of all; maintains the community's open space, common facilities and property; and protects and enhances the value of the properties within the Cameron Station community.

The Design and Maintenance Standards (DMS) is designed to guide and assist homeowners, residents, members of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) and Cameron Station management staff in maintaining and enhancing Cameron Station's carefully designed environment. It addresses additions, changes and improvements for which homeowners must submit applications to the ARC, as well as maintenance issues related to homes and common areas.

Exterior Modification

As a Cameron Station resident, you are obligated by the DMS to seek approval from the ARC prior to making any exterior modification to your home or lot. This includes, but is not limited to: fences, decks, patios, landscaping, play equipment, exterior painting, shutter replacement, door replacement, additional outside doors and window replacement.

The "Exterior Modification Application" can be obtained through the Management office or a pdf can be printed from the website.

  • A separate application should be completed for each modification.
  • Submit the application(s) to the HOA office at least ten days prior to the next ARC meeting. Homeowners are encouraged to attend the meeting at which their application(s) will be reviewed – check www.cameronstation.org for date and time.
  • The review process may take up to 45 days.
  • Approval or disapproval letters are sent to the applicant following the ARC meeting.

If you have questions related to the application process, please contact the Covenants Administrator at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or (703) 567-4881.

Please be aware that an exterior improvement project not shown on the approved plans from the City of Alexandria requires specific permission of the City of Alexandria and the HOA. Approval of a project by the city does not exempt a homeowner from seeking approval from the ARC. Likewise, approval of a project from the ARC does not exempt a homeowner from City of Alexandria permit requirements.

Private Tree Replacement Application

In a letter dated September 9, 2009, the City of Alexandria gave the Cameron Station Community Association (CSCA) authorization to enforce landscaping and tree coverage requirements on the individual lots. As part of the agreement, the Association is required to utilize standards and criteria prepared by the City Arborist when individual lot owners request the removal and replacement of trees on the private lots.

The Board of Directors requested the development of established guidelines for the removal and replacement of trees on the private lots in accordance with the City of Alexandria requirements. The ARC developed the Private Tree Replacement guidelines as part of the DMS. These guidelines address application requirements, tree species and acceptable and prohibited substitutions, qualification for replacement and manner of replacement.

Any homeowners requesting to remove and replace a tree must complete the "Private Tree Replacement Application". As part of the DMS, homeowners will need to provide substantiation of property damage or impending property damage caused by the tree as part of this application.

Residents are encouraged to visit the Tree Study Information page.
