  1. For the neighbor who is an early bird

Sometimes, the best unhurried quality time is the early morning before the hustle and bustle of the day. Grab a warm cup of coffee and catch-up with your valentine at Cameron Café, which opens at 7AM on weekdays and 8AM on Saturdays. If you prefer to meet up on Sunday, you can venture just outside the community to Cortado Café, located in the Shoppes at Foxchase, where you can find an extensive food menu to go along with your tailor-made cup of coffee. As their website says, “a cup of coffee is the perfect reason to get together with friends” and enjoy each other’s company without distraction.

  1. For the creative, DIY-loving neighbor

This DIY studio offers hands-on classes for creating home décor from raw materials—think wood signs, centerpiece boxes, round lazy Susans, and chunky knit blankets. The popular signature class includes two complimentary glasses of wine with each registration, and guests are encouraged to bring their own snacks to enjoy during the three-hour session. You can also select a family-friendly option appropriate for valentines ages six and up, or order a to-go DIY kit  and craft at home.

Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, and what better way to embrace that spirit than by indulging in some self-care? Located just outside of Cameron Station, Metropolitan Nail Bar Alexandria is a chic and unassuming salon that creates a relaxed atmosphere for easy conversation—or a bit of quiet time to yourself—while you enjoy a pampered Valentine’s Day experience. The service menu ranges from standard mani-pedis to indulgent spa packages and even offers “pint sized” services for kids. Afterwards, stop by the brand-new Tropical Smoothie Cafe located next door to the salon for a sweet treat like a Peanut Butter Cup or Chai Banana Boost smoothie.

  1. For the neighbor who will travel (and bundle up) for beer

Port City Brewing Company is an award-winning brewery offering tasting, tours, and full pints at their pet- and family-friendly facility in Alexandria, VA. You can reach it via a 1-mile walk or bike ride through Ben Brenman Park and down Holmes Run Trail. Sure, it might be a tad chilly, but who said romance can’t come with a side of brisk air? If you do brave the cold together, you’ll be rewarded with great beer and a toasty atmosphere at the journey’s end. While Port City does not offer food service, you can check out their weekend food truck line up on their website.

Having just read two books set in Reims, France—The Winemaker's Wife and The Widow Clicquot: A Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who RuledIt—bubbly wine is currently top of mind for me. Besides, what epitomizes romance and celebration more than champagne? If you’re in the mood fora sparkling glass, consider visiting Brut Champagne and Wine Bar for Valentine’s Day. Located just a few blocks from the Old Town Waterfront, this cozy, brick-exposed setting offers wine, coffee, small plates, and regular tasting events. Whether you’re stopping in with a group of gal pals or thinking of a double date, be sure to keep your party here intimate: seating is first, come first serve, and the largest party they can accommodate is four.

  1. For the adventurous and dexterous neighbor

With more than 18,000 square feet of climbing walls, and lessons and routes suitable for all skill levels (including children), the facility has something to offer everyone from newbies to seasoned climbers. Don’t think rock climbing sounds very romantic? Not only does the sport require trust, communication, and teamwork, but research shows that exercising together can lead to increased bonding, making this date an excellent way to strengthen connections between friends and couples alike. So, swap out roses for ropes and chocolates for chalk, and get ready to ascend to new heights together.
