How lucky we are in Cameron Station to live right across the street from the wonderful Beatley Central Library! The library is a vital cultural and educational asset to our community. It offers so much more than a wide range of books and other media: On any day, you might find activities like theater or dance for children, tai chi for adults, author talks, and programs designed for teens. Plus, Beatley offers passport applications by appointment. (Click here to see the main Alexandria Library website for full details or visit alexlibraryva.org.)

Much of the support for the library’s facility and programs comes from the Friends of the Beatley Central Library. As a nonprofit all-volunteer organization, the Friends’ fundraising efforts and the generous donation of their time make a big difference in the library’s community offerings. The organization helps fund everything from programs for children, teens, and adults, improvements to the reading garden, whiteboards for meeting rooms, and new comfy chairs.

Each spring and fall, the Friends raise funds through a large sale of donated books. The next one is March 13-18. You will find bargains on thousands of books, CDs, and DVDs. If you’ve never been to a book sale, you’ve missed something very special. Many Friends, board directors, and book sale volunteers live in Cameron Station.

Want to help? Whether you’re interested in donating a few books, a few dollars, or a few hours, there’s a way for everyone to get involved with the Friends.

  • Join the Friends of the Beatley Central Library. An annual family membership is only $25, and an individual membership is $15. You can sign up and find more information on the Friends website (click here or go to beatleyfriends.org), or you can join in person at the information desk in the library. Plus, being a member gives you access to the book sale preview day and first dibs on the best choices before the sale is open to the public.
  • Volunteer for the book sale. The Friends group is always looking for volunteers, especially during our book sales. If you have a few hours to donate between March 9-18, you can contact antoinette.allen54@gmail.com to get involved. Required training will be held on March 9.
  • Volunteer throughout the year. We also need help sorting donated books and media throughout the year. This involves a short training and a few hours per week. Or you can volunteer your specialized skills in communication, social media, marketing, and event planning. To learn more or to volunteer, please contact me at kayb1121@gmail.com.

Come join the Friends of Beatley Central Library, have a good time, meet some great book lovers, and help make a difference in your community!Book sale photoPhoto of Friends of the Beatley Central Library's book sale.

Keep an eye on The Compass for more information on upcoming library activities and events. For example, All Alexandria Reads starts in March with book recommendations. The theme is “Courage.”
